| Sports Injuries
With the onset of autumn, people up and down the country are raising themselves out of their armchairs and on to the football or rugby pitch each weekend. Accompanying this rise in activity is a rise in the number of sprains, aches and strains suffered each week. This month's treatment page therefore focuses on sports and how homoeopathy can provide safe, effective and side effect free relief for common sporting injuries.
NB If the symptoms of any injury persist you should seek the advice of a qualified homoeopathic practitioner.
Arnica
The most important and versatile remedy of them all. In pillule format Arnica can be used for concussion and all sporting injuries. The resulting bruising from an injury can be treated using either pillules or Arnica cream.
Rhus Tox
Rhus tox has long been used for treating rheumatic pain and other musculo-skeletal problems. To this end it is useful for reducing inflammation of muscles and can be given alone for any muscle injury or with Arnica and Agaricus for badly torn muscles and the treatment of dislocations.
Ruta Grav
Treats injuries to ligaments and tendons and can be used for strains, tennis elbow and tenosynovitis etc. Used with Arnica it helps severe strains and bruised bones.
Hypericum
Hypericum's main use is to treat nerve injuries and damage to nerve endings. It is particularly useful with Arnica in treating crushed areas which have a lot of nerve endings e.g. fingers and coccyx.
Symphytum
Speeds up the joining of bones and can be used with Arnica following a fracture.
All of the above remedies can be applied locally in the form of an ointment or a cream. Pillules can also be taken internally.
For bleeding, Calendula tincture can be applied and, in most cases, works immediately.
Hypercal / Calendula tincture, spray or cream can be applied to any wound to stop infection and speed up healing. Calendula ointment is good for treating blisters.
